The discovery of hantaan virus: comparative biology and serendipity in a world at war.

چکیده
Several excellent reviews document the formal history of hantavirus disease and virology in Asia, Scandinavia, southern Europe, and the Americas [1–5]. I will not rehash or expand on this body of information; rather, I wish to relate personal experiences that played a largely unplanned role in the recovery of the prototype Hantaan virus from nature. I began my career in virology at the laboratory of Dr. Robert Chanock, in 1958. We worked on the cause(s) of acute respiratory diseases, including the common cold; with others, we soon identified many related viruses that induce that minor clinical syndrome. In 1962 I was asked to be the project officer for a large contract campaign to develop a vaccine for the common cold; instead, I fled the Bethesda, Maryland, campus, for a small field station maintained by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, in the Panama Canal Zone. Soon I became involved in the study of an apparently new, frequently lethal, hemorrhagic disease in the northeastern frontier of Bolivia. At just this time, the tense Cuban Missile Crisis occurred. In its aftermath, President John Kennedy promised not to invade Cuba, in return for the Soviet removal of the missiles with their atomic warheads. The US military was fearful that Che Guevara would lead a guerilla invasion into mainland South America and surmised (correctly) that his initial target would be Bolivia. When US Army officials in the Canal Zone learned of the new disease and of our efforts to work on it, they promised total support for a campaign to discover the etiologic agent and, if possible, to control the ongoing epidemic; they provided funds and airplanes to carry personnel and sup-

Explaining the Concept and Models of Serendipity In Information Search Process
Background and Aim: Searching for information is not always a targeted activity; it can also be done involuntarily. The serendipity has the ability to find information randomly and as something happy, something unexpected, or a pleasant surprise. This paper examines and analyzes the concept of serendipity and its models in the process of information searching. Methods: The present study uses a ...
متن کاملThe comparative analysis of the protease molecule structure of the Human lymphotropic virus type-1 (HTLV-1)
Background and Aims: Human lymphotropic virus type-1 (HTLV-1) causes various diseases such as adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL) and HTLV-1 associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraperesis (HAM / TSP) in humans. The main goal of this study is to compare Iranian protease subtypes structure of this virus (HTLV-1) to samples collected from other part of world in order to understand their diff...

H antavirus has attracted more and more attention as an emerging pathogenic virus in the past decades. It causes two distinct human diseases: Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) and human pulmonary syndrome (HPS). Reports on clinical entities possibly caused by hantaviruses in China and England backdate into the first millennium and the Middle Age, respectively (1,2). However, it laste...

This paper tries to study the role of political leadership and how it influenced victories and failures during history. Therefore, in a journey through fluctuating Iranian history, four prominent and influential wars of past two centuries – initially Iran-Russia war and finally Iran-Iraq war- have been studied. While comparing Iran's political leadership in these wars and their consequences, th...

Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) is a severe disease characterized by a rapid onset of pulmonary edema followed by respiratory failure and cardiogenic shock. The HPS associated viruses are members of the genus Hantavirus, family Bunyaviridae. Hantaviruses have a worldwide distribution and are broadly split into the New World hantaviruses, which includes those causing HPS, and the Old World h...
